224 West 7th Street, Santa Rosa
The City of Santa Rosa Planning Department directed the owner of this modest cottage in downtown Santa Rosa to determine if their proposed deck replacement would negatively impact the historic building or surrounding historic district. The owner hired Alice to assess the project for its consistency with the “Secretary’s Standards.” The cottage was built in 1916 and is a contributing resource to the locally significant “Westside (West End) Historic District.” This district is significant for its vernacular residential architecture of the late-19th to early-20th centuries on the “wrong side of the tracks” in Santa Rosa. This area, which grew up as “Italian Town,” is significant as Santa Rosa’s only historic ethnic neighborhood. Alice determined that the deck project on the rear of the house would have no adverse impact on either the individual house or the surrounding historic district.
